Ruffian was born in April, 1972 at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky.

She was sired by Reviewer, a son of Bold Ruler, and her dam was Shenanigans, sired by Native Dancer.

Ruffian's breeders were Mr. & Mrs. Stuart Janney.

She was trained by Frank Whitely.

Ruffian's first race was May 22nd, 1974. She completely dominated the field by crossing the wire 15 lengths in front while tying the track record for 5 1/2 furlongs, something no other 2 year old had ever done while breaking their maiden race.

Her victories included the Fashion Stakes, the Astoria, the Sororiety, The Acorn, Mother Goose, Comely Stakes, Coaching Club American Oaks and the Spinaway.

She was so good, everyone wondered, how would she run against a colt?

In the summer of 1975, a match race was set between Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure, the Kentucky Derby Winner of 1975.

Ruffian was pulling away from Foolish Pleasure in the backstretch when her foreleg snapped. A valiant effort was made to save her, but she shattered her cast upon awakening from the long, grueling surgery. She was humanely put down, but will live in the hearts of millions forever, as one of the greatest, fastest fillies of all time.
