he Black Stallion was played by a few horses in both movies, but he was predominantly played by Cass Ole, owned by San Antonio arabians in Texas. Cass Ole was not entirely black. He had 4 white socks and a star on his forehead. He therefore had to have his white markings dyed to portray "The Black", who following the book, was solid black with no white markings at all.
Al Marah Cassanova
He was almost by definition a very correct, very sound horse. He was a very high-percentage CMK. Conformation-wise, he tended to be a bit heavy in the neck, but it had good length and shape. He was not the "modern" halter horse, but he was a very fine Arabian. He had some success in halter as a young horse, but as he matured he became most successfully a performance horse. He was a terrific performance horse with a superior disposition. Cass Ole died from complications of colic in 1993, and is buried in the sandringat his owners farm in San Antonio, Texas. He has many, many progeny to carry on the name and the superiour arabian look.
