Buying a horse can be an ordeal. Your best bet is to bring someone along who knows horses. It's even better if they know the breed you are interested in. For example, if you are looking for a morgan, it would be a good idea to bring someone who breeds and shows morgans. Someone other than the seller.
Other options depending on where you live is to bring a vet or trainer. Trainers will be able to understand if the horse is suited to your purpose. A vet will tell you if there is anything wrong with the horse that will hamper his abilities.
If you are buying the horse for a child, it is sometimes not in the child's best interest to bring the child along as children have tendancies to fall in love with the horse's color or size more than anything. The best in this case is to take along a knowledgeable friend or instructor to decide what is best for your child. Ponies can be cute, but they can also be cantakerous and mischievous. An older, more seasoned horse perhaps purchased from a riding stable are more suitable.
No matter who you bring with you, be sure to not let the horse's looks take priority over the nature and experience of the horse.
